Why Fall Is Pest Season
As temperatures drop, insects and rodents instinctively search for warm places to overwinter. Your home — full of warmth, food, and moisture — is exactly what they're looking for. Proactive pest-proofing in early fall is far more effective (and affordable) than reactive pest control after an infestation takes hold.
This checklist covers your entire home from the roof to the foundation.
Exterior Checklist
Foundation and Walls
- ✅ Inspect the foundation for cracks wider than ¼ inch. Fill with concrete patch compound or caulk.
- ✅ Check where utility pipes and wires enter the home — seal gaps with steel wool plus caulk, or use foam sealant.
- ✅ Look for gaps around window frames and door frames. Apply weatherstripping or exterior caulk.
Roof and Attic
- ✅ Inspect roof shingles for damage — pests, especially squirrels and birds, exploit loose or missing shingles.
- ✅ Screen attic vents with ¼-inch hardware cloth to block mice, bats, and insects.
- ✅ Ensure the chimney has a properly fitted cap with a spark arrestor mesh to block entry.
- ✅ Trim tree branches that overhang the roof — these serve as highways for squirrels and rodents.
Doors and Windows
- ✅ Install or replace door sweeps on all exterior and garage doors.
- ✅ Check and repair any torn or ill-fitting window screens.
- ✅ Ensure sliding door tracks are sealed tightly when closed.
Yard and Landscaping
- ✅ Move firewood stacks at least 20 feet from the house — rodents and insects nest in wood piles.
- ✅ Clear leaf litter, mulch, and debris from within 12 inches of your foundation walls.
- ✅ Trim shrubs and bushes so they don't touch the siding of your home.
- ✅ Check that outdoor garbage cans have secure, tight-fitting lids.
Interior Checklist
Kitchen and Pantry
- ✅ Store all dry goods in sealed airtight containers — cardboard boxes are not pest-proof.
- ✅ Check the area under the sink for moisture or pipe gaps. Seal gaps and fix any leaks promptly.
- ✅ Vacuum and wipe down behind large appliances (refrigerator, stove) where crumbs accumulate.
Basement and Crawl Space
- ✅ Inspect for moisture issues — damp basements attract cockroaches, silverfish, and centipedes. Use a dehumidifier if needed.
- ✅ Store items in plastic bins with lids rather than cardboard boxes on the floor.
- ✅ Check crawl space vents and ensure they're screened.
Garage
- ✅ Inspect the bottom seal on the garage door for gaps or deterioration.
- ✅ Don't store bird seed, grass seed, or pet food in open bags — use sealed containers.
- ✅ Remove clutter that provides nesting habitat (old boxes, rags, newspapers).
Proactive Deterrent Measures
Beyond sealing and cleaning, these additional steps add extra protection:
- Place snap traps in the basement, garage, and attic as an early warning system — even if you haven't seen pests yet.
- Apply perimeter insecticide spray around your foundation exterior in early fall to create a protective barrier.
- Use pheromone monitor traps inside closets and storage rooms to detect insect activity early.
- Check and replace weatherstripping annually — it degrades and creates gaps over time.
Make It a Seasonal Habit
Pest-proofing isn't a one-time job. Aim to do a thorough exterior inspection every fall and a lighter check in spring. Keeping a simple log of problem areas you've found helps you address them systematically year after year. A small investment of time in fall prevention can save you from significant expense and stress later on.
